That was the wishiest of wishful thinking—and not just because such large segments of the current Republican party delight in Trump. It’s also because the Reaganite wing has made such a poor showing for itself.

It’s generous to call the desiccated exoskeleton of Reaganism a “wing” at all, and frankly, the use of the term “Reaganism” is not really accurate anyway. What people mean when they use the term is traditional Republicanism, which includes belief in free enterprise, smaller government, freer trade, respect for the Constitution, dedication to American world leadership, and social conservatism, among other ideals. Republicans who continue to adhere to those principles embraced Haley as the last man (as it were) standing.

One reason there weren’t more traditional Republicans was on display in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed. The world might look very different if traditional Republicans had been willing to stand firm for their values when they came under assault from an ignorant, cruel demagogue. So I was briefly optimistic when I saw that an honest-to-goodness Reaganite, John Lehman, who served as secretary of the Navy under Reagan, had weighed in. The headline was promising: “Reagan Would Never Vote for Trump.” But after that bold beginning, the subhead was deflating: “He also didn’t care much for Biden. Like me, he’d be looking for a strong third-party candidate to support.” Read full story here Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9166629838286367573.post-65690214501144358492024-03-21T00:30:00.001-04:002024-03-21T00:30:00.144-04:00Uh Oh, Donald: Bond Edition30 underwriters declined to back a bond for the Republican presidential nominee.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9166629838286367573.post-86719760293594356482024-03-20T11:30:00.001-04:002024-03-20T17:59:14.272-04:00N.Y. state asks court not to let Trump forgo $454M bond during fraud case appeal

New York state lawyers urged an appeals court Wednesday not to buy former President Donald Trump's claims that it's impossible to post a bond fully covering a $454 million civil fraud judgment while he appeals.

The presumptive Republican nominee's lawyers said earlier this week that he couldn't find an underwriter willing to take on the entire amount. But the state is arguing that Trump and his co-defendants didn't explore every option.

The “defendants fail to propose a serious alternative to fully secure the judgment," Dennis Fan, a lawyer in the state attorney general's office, wrote in papers sent to the appeals court.

He suggested those alternatives could include dividing the total among multiple bonds from different underwriters — or letting a court hold some of Trump's real estate while he appeals. He's challenging a judge's ruling last month that he, his company and key executives inflated his wealth on financial statements that were used to get loans and insurance.

Messages seeking comment on the state's new papers were sent to Trump's attorneys. In a radio interview before the latest development, Trump reiterated his complaints about the case, the judgment and the bond requirement.

“They don’t even give you a chance to appeal. They want you to put up money before the appeal. So if you sell a property or do something, and then you win the appeal, you don’t have the property,” Trump said on WABC radio's “Sid & Friends In The Morning.”

Under the judgment, Trump needs to pay more than $454 million in penalties and ever-growing interest; some of his co-defendants owe additional money. So far, courts have said that if the former president wants to as contributor?stave off collection while he appeals, he’ll have to post a bond for his entire liability.

Trump said last year that he has “fairly substantially over $400 million in cash.” But he's now facing more than $543 million in personal legal liabilities from judgments in the civil fraud case, brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, and in two lawsuits brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. Kathy Hochul and legislative leaders, pushing them to strengthen New York's Freedom of Information Law. They argue the state's FOIL system is broken and must be fixed, urging lawmakers to pass bills to expedite the public records request process.

Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal sponsors bills to require state agencies annually publish statistics about their FOIL compliance, and require businesses working with the government reapply for record disclosure exemptions.

"That's so important for our democracy, which is struggling at so many different levels – state, local and federal," said Hoylman-Sigal, a Manhattan Democrat.

Accessibility of public records is a timely discussion in Albany as state leaders start serious budget negotiations. With New York is known for a political climate clouded by corruption and deals behind closed doors, the bar for transparency is low.

Less than a third of state agencies included FOIL data in 2022 transparency plans, and most departments take more than 20 days as required by law to provide requested public records, according to Reinvent Albany.

"Unfortunately, FOIL isn't being treated like a public service – it's kind of an afterthought," Reinvent Albany Senior Policy Advisor Rachael Fauss said. "It's something that agencies have to do because the law says they have to release these documents. We'd like to see the way that it's thought about flipped, and it be treated like a public service." Full post Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9166629838286367573.post-79045329949285029342024-03-17T00:00:00.003-04:002024-03-17T10:06:58.214-04:00'No point donating now': Lifelong Republicans revolt after Lara Trump elected RNC co-chair

Former President Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, has now officially replaced Ronna McDaniel as the new co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) following a unanimous vote.

Despite having no previous campaign or political organizing experience, Lara — who is the wife of the former president's son, Eric — is now in charge of the Republican Party's national organization, and is tasked with both retaking the White House in 2024 along with regaining control of the US Senate.
