Lindsey Graham feels hopeless after backing Cruz: ‘We could lose in 2016 and we probably will’

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) predicted on Thursday that Republicans would “probably” lose the 2016 presidential race because both of the leading GOP candidates were unappealing to most voters.

After ending his 2016 bid for the Republican nomination, Graham begrudgingly decided to back Cruz, a man who he once joked about murdering. In fact, Graham said earlier this year that choosing between Cruz and Donald Trump was “like being shot or poisoned. What does it really matter?”

On Thursday, the South Carolina Republican seemed resigned to lose the 2016 race.

“We can lose in 2016 and probably will,” he predicted during an appearance on MSNBC.

“Here’s my concern,” Graham said. “Trump gets wiped out. Ted, I don’t know if he can beat [Hillary Clinton] or not but at least we’ve got a fighting chance.”

“If Trump is the standard-bearer, it’s not about 2016, it’s about losing the heart and soul of the conservative movement. I’m not going to stand behind a guy that gets David Duke’s support.”
