Voter enrollment shifts in N.Y. boost Democratic ranks

Between the 2008 presidential election and last month, enrolled Democrats boosted their rolls by about 262,000, an increase of 5 percent to 5.3 million voters. The number of enrolled Republicans dropped 3 percent, to nearly 2.7 million voters.

So New York has about twice as many Democrats as Republicans heading into Tuesday’s election for federal and state offices, a slightly wider margin than four years ago. In 2008, New York had more than 5 million Democrats and 2.8 million Republicans, a review of state Board of Elections figures by Gannett’s Albany bureau shows.
