In race for Congress, Dan Maffei's 14,388 vote lead over Ann Marie Buerkle appears insurmountable

Dan Maffei declared victory today in his election rematch with Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle after late-reporting counties gave him what appeared to be an insurmountable lead in the 24th Congressional District race.

By the end of the day, Maffei had a net gain of almost 2,000 votes – thanks mainly to an election-night error. He widened his lead over Buerkle to 6 percentage points, 49 percent to 43 percent. Green Party candidate Ursula Rozum had 8 percent of the vote.

But Buerkle, R-Onondaga Hill, declined to concede that Maffei had reclaimed the seat she seized from him in a 2010 upset.

Unless another error turns up, the math shows that Buerkle has a virtually impossible hill to climb.
With all election districts reporting, Maffei’s lead was 14,388 votes. POST
