Oswego County unemployment rate for January likely to top 10 percent

The jobless rate in Oswego County could top 10 percent this week when the state's January unemployment figures are released.

And it wouldn't be much of a jump.

In December Oswego County's jobless rate stood at 9.1 percent, the highest in Central New York and the fourth highest rate in the state.

But even in good times Oswego County's jobless numbers usually far exceed those found in neighboring Cayuga, Madison and Onondaga counties.

In the 128 months between 1990 and 2008, Oswego led the four-county region in unemployment except once, in August 1990, when Cayuga County edged it out 5.1 to 5 percent, state Labor Department statistics show.

Looks like Republican leadership in Oswego County works great, well not at least for those looking for work. Oswego Democrat

Regarding the unemployment rate in Oswego County please consider this: these figures do not include people who are no longer collecting unemployment (benefits have run out), as well as those who are unemployed and will not apply for any type of assistance whether it’s unemployment or welfare assistance. The actual figure is, and always has been, higher than what is reported.

This also applies to the poverty rate in our county. Recently our Republican Legislators gave our Oswego County DSS Director a good evaluation, and a pat on the back for a job well done. Oswego County lost $282,130 in child care grant money. It was her job to over see this grant as Department Head, and in my view losing it to another county is not exactly a stellar performance.

Grant money works like this: “use it or lose it”. How is losing that amount of money a good job, and how about an explanation from our Republican Legislators who gave this person this “good” evaluation of her job performance?
